COACHES

Hix-small

Coach Gary Hix
HEAD COACH

Coach Hix is entering his 6th season as Head Coach of the Coronado Mustang baseball program. He has led the Mustangs into the post-season 4 of the 5 years as head coach. His 2011 team advanced to the State Championship game by defeating the defending State Champion, Corpus Christi Carroll 10-0 before falling to Brazoswood 10-3, in the final game. In 2012, the Mustangs were District, Bi-District, and Area Champions before falling in the Regional Quarterfinals. In 2013 and 2015, the Mustangs advanced to Area.

Coach Hix graduated from Permian High School. He continued his baseball career at Lubbock Christian College under Larry Hays and was a member of the 1983 NAIA National Championship team. While at Lubbock Christian, he was an Honorable Mention All-American selection in 1982 and received All-District and All-Area Selections as well.

After graduation, he began his coaching career at Lubbock Christian High School, where he re-activated the baseball program in 1987. He then coached at Canyon High School for 15 seasons. While at Canyon, his teams won nine District Championships and advanced to the State Tournament in 2003. Following his coaching years at Canyon, he coached at Amarillo High for 7 years. At Amarillo High, his teams advanced to the playoffs five times. In his 22 combined seasons at Canyon and Amarillo, his teams qualified for the playoffs 17 times. He has a career record of 533-287-6. Since 1991, Coach Hix has been named Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame Baseball Coach of the Year 6 times and South Plains Super Team Coach of the Year. He was the Lubbock Avalanche Journal Coach of the Year in 2011. This past summer Coach Hix was selected as the 6A Coach for the 2015 North All-Star team of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Coach Hix and his wife, Vickie, have been married 27 years and have two daughters, Brittany and Reagan. Brittany and her husband, Jordan Roberts, live in Wolfforth, Texas, and have one son, Cooper. Reagan is married to Jordan Elam and they reside in Levelland, Texas. Vickie works for the school district and is the Executive Secretary to the Chief Financial Officer.

Bibb-smallCoach Brad Bibb
Assistant Coach / Varsity

Coach Bibb is beginning his 10th year on the Coronado coaching staff. He has coached the Junior Varsity for the past 9 years, but this year he will coach the outfielders for all levels and be a Varsity assistant. He also coaches Freshman football and teaches Algebra I.

He graduated from Seymour High School in 1997, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and cross country. He was a three-time All-District baseball player as an infielder and started on the 1995 Region II-2A Finalist team as a first basemen. He graduated from Midwestern State University in 2002 with a degree in kinesiology and mathematics.

Coach Bibb began his coaching career at Smylie Wilson Junior High in 2002, and he spent 4 years there before moving to Coronado in the fall of 2006.

Brad and his wife, Cate, have been married for 10 years this upcoming summer. They have a son, Carson, who will be 5 in March, and they are expecting twins in July.

Hensley-smallCoach Shawn Hensley
Assistant Coach / Varsity

Coach Hensley is in his 10th year on the Coronado coaching staff. He is a 1990 graduate of Liberal High School in Liberal, Kansas, where he played football and baseball. Coach Hensley played infield at Seward County Community College where he earned his Associates Degree in Science in 1992. Coach Hensley then went on to play baseball at Lubbock Christian University from 1992-1994. While at LCU, the Chaps won their conference tournament and played in a baseball regional.

After graduating from LCU in 1995 with a degree kinesiology, Coach Hensley started his education and coaching career in Lubbock ISD at Martin Head Start and Lubbock High. In 2001, he returned to Liberal to become the head baseball coach at his alma mater. After 4 years in Kansas, Coach Hensley returned to Lubbock to coach at Coronado. His duties at Coronado include teaching Physics and IPC, coaching football and Varsity baseball.

Shawn and his wife, Stacey, have been married for 21 years. They have 2 boys. Caden is a 15 year old freshman at CHS while Rhett is 13 and attends Irons Middle School. When not coaching, he attempts to keep up with them!

Marrs-smallCoach Jeff Marrs
Assistant Coach / JV Gold

Coach Marrs is in his fourth year of coaching here at Coronado. Coach Marrs grew up in Odessa, Texas, where he graduated from Odessa High School in 2000. While in high school, Coach Marrs was a two-year letterman in football and a three-year letterman in baseball. After graduation, he continued his baseball career at Odessa College. In 2002, he transferred to Texas Tech University where he graduated with a degree in History in 2008.

Coach Marrs began his coaching career in 2008 at Smylie Wilson Middle School here in Lubbock, where he remained until 2012 when he came to Coronado. His duties at Coronado include teaching World History, coaching Freshman football and JV Gold baseball.

Coach Marrs and his wife Kasey were married in 2014 and are expecting their first child, a daughter, in April.

Coach Klay Keith
Assistant Coach / JV Red

Coach Keith is in his first year at Coronado High School. He graduated from Plainview High School in 2003, where he lettered in football. He is a Wayland Baptist University graduate where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. He then attended the University of Texas-San Antonio where he received his degree in Education in 2010.

Coach Keith began his coaching career at Crane High School in Crane, Texas, where he coached Varsity football, basketball, and track until 2015. His classroom and coaching duties at Coronado include World Geography, Varsity football, and JV Red baseball.
